Coconut & Chocolate Macaroons

Macaroons are a small type of cake. They are circular and usually made from almond grounds, coconut, or other nuts. From there, other common ingredients are: egg whites, sugar, honey, vanilla, spices, glace cherries, jam, chocolate, and more. They are most commonly cooked on edible rice paper and put on a cookie sheet.

Where Do Macaroons Originate?

Macaroons have been traced back to Italians in the 9th century. Later, by the French Revolution, women paid for their housing and rent by baking and selling macaroon cookies—known as the “Macaroon Sisters.” Later, these cookies were adopted by the Italian Jews as they could be eaten during Passover.

Coconut Macaroons

Coconut is a common ingredient in Macaroons found in the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States of America, Mauritius, The Netherlands, Germany, and Uruguay. They are most commonly served with a blob of fruit jam, like raspberry or strawberry that is at the center of the Macaroon. They are also commonly served with chocolate, as they are dipped in milk chocolate.

What You Will Need To Make Coconut & Chocolate Macaroons

  • 1 14-ounce package sweetened shredded coconut (about 5 cups)
  • 4 large egg whites
  • 2/3 cups sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/3 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, melted and cooled to room temperature

What You Will Need To Make Coconut & Chocolate Macaroons

Start by pre-heating the oven to 325° F. In a medium bowl, add the coconut, egg whites, sugar, flour, salt, and vanilla together. Mix well to make sure all the ingredients are evenly mixed. Drop packed tablespoons of the coconut mixture onto parchment-lined baking sheets. You want them to be spaced roughly 1 inch apart. Bake, rotating the baking sheets halfway through, until lightly golden. This will take about 30 minutes. Cool slightly on the baking sheets. Once cooled, then transfer to wire racks to finish cooling process. Once they have completely cooled, dip the bottom of each macaroon in the chocolate. You can either melt the chocolate yourself or use a store bought chocolate sauce.  Next, place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Refrigerate the macaroons until they are firm, It will take about 35 minutes. Store the macaroons in an airtight container or bag and keep them at room temperature for up to 7 days. Enjoy with friends, family, and/or guests.
