Michelin has given out stars left and right for its 2015 Michelin Guide to Spain and Portugal.
This year’s guide features 23 new one-star and two-stars restaurants, many located in Madrid. It also includes 37 new Bib gourmand restaurants.
The eight restaurants that received a 3-stars rating last year were able to retain the honor. Those include: Akelaŕe, Arzak, Azurmendi, DiverXO, El Celler de Can Roca, Martín Berasategui, Quique Dacosta and Sant Pau.
Mediterranean restaurant Aponiente in El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz) and Portuguese eatery Belcanto in Lisbon, were the only new restaurants added to the 2-stars list.
Some worthy mentions for the 1-star recipients include: Pakta in Barcelona, Kazan in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Aizian in Bilbao, Elkano in Getaria, Albora in Madrid, El Carmen de Montesión in Toledo, Punto MX in Madrid, and São Gabriel in Almancil-Faro.
The 2015 Michelin Guide is diverse and honors the creativity of chefs within the region. Some of the restaurants are serving up classic Spanish and Portuguese dishes exquisitely, while others are practicing more avant-garde styles of cuisine. “Chefs are constantly looking for clever ways to reinvent themselves, as illustrated by the recent surge in tapas bars that are making quality and excellence more broadly accessible in line with a new gourmet food philosophy,” said Michael Ellis, International Director of the MICHELIN guides.
