Kids Can Make: Taco Cheeseburger

Preparing meals in the kitchen is always easier and quicker with extra pair of hands. Get your kids involved in the cooking process by preparing some easy, kid-friendly meals. Kids feel a sense of pride when they help to cook, and they are also more interested in eating the food they helped prepare. This works especially well if you have a picky eater who regularly refuses to eat anything you put in front of him or her. Working with the different ingredients, learning about them, tasting them, and cooking them can greatly change any kid’s opinion and make him or her more likely to eat and enjoy them. Given below is a kid-friendly recipe that you can get your kids involved in.

Ingredients

1 pound lean ground beef

6 flour tortillas (8 inch)

8 ounces shredded Mexican cheese blend

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground cumin

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

1/2 cup chopped onions

1 tomato, chopped

1/2 cup sour cream

1/3 cup ketchup

Directions

– Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

– Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and cook for a few minutes until they are

translucent. Add the beef with garlic powder, salt, cumin, black pepper, and tomatoes. Stir the

mixture and cook until the meat is browned and crumbly. Keep aside.

– Place a tortilla on a work surface and spread some of the meat mixture on it. Top with some of the

cheese blend. Roll the tortilla over the filling into a burrito shape.

– Repeat the same process of filling and rolling the rest of the tortillas. Lightly grease a baking dish and

place the filled tortillas in a single layer on it. Sprinkle cheese blend on the tortillas and cover the

baking dish with aluminum foil.

– Bake in the preheated oven until the tortillas are heated through and the cheese on top is melted. This

will take 20-25 minutes.

– In a small bowl take the sour cream and add in the ketchup. Mix well.

– Place a tortilla on a serving plate and top with a dollop of the sour cream sauce before serving.

This simple, kid-friendly dish is perfect for dinnertime! Younger kids can help with assembling the tacos and putting in the filling and cheese according to their liking. They can even help roll the tortillas. The sour cream sauce is easy enough for the younger kids to make all on their own too! For older kids, chopping the onions and tomatoes, greasing the baking dish, and placing the tortillas in to bake are things that they can help with. With all the work distributed and done quickly, everyone is going to be hungry enough to gobble up these deliciously cheesy and gooey taco cheeseburgers in no time!  If you like, for adults you can also use hot sauce or taco sauce, as well as salsa with these cheeseburgers. This dish is a yummy substitute to avoid a heavy hamburger meal.
